Greetings, fellow sound- and life-travelers.

Welcome to the second-ever posting to my studio mailing list! In this mailing:

1. OPEN STUDIOS 2006

Open Studios 2006 has come and gone, and it was a great success. Many thanks to those of you who stopped in to listen to the Deep Earth Dome, to poke around in the Gallery of Altercated Objects, or to simply say “Hello”.

My head is still swimming with memories of the extraordinary people who came to visit: the mathematician who was interested in the meter-stick tetrahedron, and pulled out a pencil and paper to show me all kinds of wonderful mathematical and geometrical relationships involving tetrahedra… the 7 year old girl who told me the Deep Earth Dome installation made her feel very peaceful inside… the 6 year old boy who told me that it scared him — until he started peppering me with one astonishingly intelligent and precocious question after another (”If there’s an earthquake, does it shake the whole Earth?” or “If there are so many earthquakes happening all the time, why can’t I feel them?”) — after a few minutes of talking, his fear had faded and he asked his mom if he could go back in and listen again… It was fun, too, to see the varied reactions to the constructions and small pieces the “Gallery of Altercated Objects”. Some people would wrinkle their foreheads in bewilderment; some would burst out laughing; and others would slip into very heady intellectual conversations over them. One woman told me with a look of astonishment, “That series of three drawings over there: That’s my PhD dissertation!” She explained that her thesis was about the perception of time and how there are something like 14 fundamental principles of temporality, like “contiguous time”, “non-contiguous time”, “anti-pre-conceptual-post-meta time” (I made that up), etc. It was way over my head, but it was fascinating nonetheless. We shared a good laugh.

I hope you all had as much fun as I did.

2. A GALLERY OF ALTERCATED OBJECTS

For those of you who couldn’t make it to Open Studios, I’ve posted a few pictures of my “Gallery of Altercated Objects“.

3. BRICKBOTTOM “ARTIST OF THE MONTH”

Just before Open Studios, I was tickled to learn that the Brickbottom Artist Association had nominated me as “artist of the month”. They put a little write-up about me in the “e-Baguette”, their on-line newsletter. You can read it online (click on the “November 2006″ past issue).

  • The Deep Earth Dome installation will remain in place until March 1, 2007, and will be open for showings by appointment beginning in January. If you’d like to schedule a private showing, just drop me an e-mail or give me a call. Bring your friends!
  • Judging from the reactions from many of the Open Studios visitors, Deep Earth Dome is ready for a wider audience. So I’m looking for other venues where it can be shown. If you know of any galleries, museums, or other venues that might be be interested in this sort of work, please let me know. Or steer them towards my website for a peek. Thanks!
  • I’ve begun planning Deep Earth Dome, Stratum 2. All I can really say about it right now is that it will focus on another layer of terrestrial vibration: the Earth-Moon tides. Think about this: as the Moon orbits the Earth, not only do the ocean levels rise and fall twice daily, but so does the solid Earth itself. And this, of course, means that you and I similarly affected. Stay tuned…
  • Work continues on a number of other projects not directly related to sound. Among them is a kinetic sculpture powered solely by ambient radio energy — another attempt to expose the invisible forces that continually surround us.
  • Come to Open Studios in Spring, 2007! More about that later…

Thanks again for your support and your interest. I hope your winter holidays are filled with beauty, truth, light, love, and peace.

Until next time, listen well — ours is a world of wonder for all to hear.
