Greetings, fellow sound-travelers.
Welcome to the July 2007 edition of my little and very occasional e-newsletter. In this edition:
- 1. “EARTH SOUND” CD IS COMING AUGUST 10
-
I am delighted to report that my latest CD, “Earth Sound,” is finally finished! It is now in the hands of the CD manufacturer and will be available for purchase on August 10.
The CD consists of three 20-minute stereo tracks of the natural seismic sounds of planet Earth. One of these tracks is an extended (and greatly improved) version of the brief “Sound Clip” that some of you heard on NPR last fall. The other two present the natural sounds of the Earth at very different time scales, which allows you to hear the ebb and flow of ocean storms as never before, the bubbling chorus of vibrations from distant earthquakes as they ripple across the Earth, and the rich sonic ambience of a surprisingly musical planet.
The CD includes a 16-page full-color illustrated booklet, in which I explain a little about the sounds and the process I used to obtain them.
On August 10 you’ll be able to order the CD (US$15) via a secure website. One of the three tracks will also be available for download from several online merchants.
When the CD comes in I’ll post all the details on my website (www.jtbullitt.com) and in a short follow-up e-mail.
- 2. OPEN STUDIOS, NOVEMBER 2007
-
It’s that time of year again! On the weekend of November 17-18, 2007, artists from my own Joy Street Artists building will once again conspire with our neighbors at the Brickbottom Artists Association to throw open our studio doors to the public for a fun- and art-filled weekend.
Open Studios is a great opportunity to sample a wide variety of art by over 100 artists in practically every medium. I do hope you’ll stop by the Joy Street Studios and drop in for a visit. I plan to have a few new things to show you — audible and otherwise. Plus, I’ll be selling autographed copies of the “Earth Sound” CD at a reduced price.

- 3. CICADAS
-
This week I’m listening to the cicadas singing high atop the linden tree across my street. The male cicada’s courtship song — the surest sign of summer’s inevitable decline — rises above the din of the city and, for almost a full minute, drowns out the trucks and sirens on bustling Massachusetts Avenue. In two months his singing will have served its end: he will find a mate, she will safely lay her eggs, and both will die. In 13 years their offspring will emerge, shed their skins, and climb the trees again, to sing once more. Perhaps you and I will still be here in 2020 to hear their song next time around. But if not: Ah, let us listen well to today’s brief gift of song!
peace.
