It's been a glorious summer for crickets in the city. During daylight hours one can occasionally hear a solitary tree cricket stridulating high above the bustle of street traffic, from somewhere in the canopy of a towering old maple tree. At dusk, the full chorus emerges and the sounds of field and tree crickets fill the air. Up close, their song masks the noise of the human world: the air conditioners, traffic, voices, and all-pervasive hummmm of the city. Even here, nature abounds!

I made this recording on a late summer evening in the shrubs adjacent to the parking lot, right in the heart of the city.

By day, an unremarkable Ilex. By night, a concert hall!
