script2javaViaParam (2004.11.30)

Test date: 2004.11.30
Machine: Macintosh 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
OS: Mac OS X (10.3.6)
Summary: Works OK only with Safari. Firefox throws a ClassNotFoundException. IE crashes.
Comments: I'm OK with abandoning support for IE/Mac. If Safari is the only Vicaya-compatible browser, well, that's OK. Maybe later releases of Firefox will be more compatible.
Browser Results
Firefox 1.0 A-E - java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: Reloader.class
Safari 1.2.4 (v125.11) A - "Test OK"; B,C,D,E: "Success"
IE 5.2.3 (5815.1) A,B,C: java.lang.ClassFormatError: Reloader (Bad magic number) D,E: IE crashes.

Vicaya 4b13b (2004.11.15)

Test date: 2004.11.15
Machine: Macintosh 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
OS: Mac OS X (10.3.5)
Summary: Works OK only with Safari. With IE and Firefox, the search results window is the size of a postage stamp. On IE the search button is inoperative. In all browsers, the other buttons seem to serve the same function as the "Search" button. Camino is a lost cause, but that's OK by me.
Comments: Can we make it compatible with Firefox? Firefox appears to be the hot new up-and-coming browser (it's now my favorite).

Some unexpected behavior with the links in the search results page (Safari):

  • When I click on a link, the page opens in the same browser window, just as I'd expect. But when I hit my browser's "back" button and I return to the search results page, all the previous search results are gone.
  • I am not able to open the link in a new browser window by right-clicking on the link (the browser's usual pop-up menu does not appear).
  • I am unable to drag a link over to another browser window.
Browser Results
Firefox 1.0 Java Plug-in Security Warning: 'Do you want to install and run signed applet distributed by "Alexander E Genaud"?...' I click the "Grant this session" button.
Two text windows appear against a silver-gray background. One is a text edit box for entering the search text (looks good). The other is a postage stamp-sized text box (1" high X 1.25" wide) with scroll bars on the right and the bottom. The only text visible in the window without scrolling is this:
Vicaya: Search Tools
Copyright (C) 2004
Alexander E Genaud

Vicaya makes heavy

When I type a search term ("desire") in the search box and click the "Search" button, the results appear in the teeny results box. All I can read without scrolling is this (in bold):

Results ( 1 - 7 of 56 ): desire
By playing with the scroll bars I can find my way around the results list. When I click on the link to a search result, that file opens in the same browser window.

I'm not sure what the other buttons are for. Clicking any one of them seems to have the same effect as clicking the "search" buttton.

Safari 1.2.4 (v125.11) Security dialog: 'Do you want to trust the signed applet distributed by "Alexander E Genaud"? Publisher authenticity verified by: "Access to Insight"'. I click "Yes".
This time the windows are sized correctly. Search results are as expected (nice!). I still don't know what those other buttons are for.
IE 5.2.3 (5815.1) "Java Plug-in Security Warning" dialog pops up, asking me 'Do you want to install and run signed applet distributed by "Alexander E Genaud"? Publisher authenticity verified by: "Access to Insight".' I click "Grant this session".
Postage stamp-sized text window (same as Firefox). Nothing happens when I click the "Search" button.
Camino 2004051715 (v0.8b) (Same security dialog as for IE. I click "Grant this session".)

No buttons or text fields appear. Instead, I get an error message:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.accesstoinsight.vicaya.Search.class

SearchDisc by ASTAware (2004.11.05)

Test date: 2004.11.05
Machine: Macintosh 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
OS: Mac OS X (10.3.5)
Summary: Requires setting up a java webserver, which is currently beyond my range of skills.
Comments: When I run SearchDisc's sample search pages, it tries to connect to a server at http://127.0.0.1:6018. Since I don't have a server at that URL, it fails. When I instead give it the URL of my Apache server (http://192.168.2.101/) I just get the default Apache web page. I don't know how to turn on port 6018, or even what it would mean to do so.
My impression: requiring users to have a java server up and running before they can search ATI's webpages is not the way to go.
Browser Results
Safari 1.2.3 (v125.9) Error:
Can't connect to server: http://127.0.0.1:6018
IE 5.2.3 (5815.1) Error:
A connection failure has occurred.
Camino 2004051715 (v0.8b) Error:
Connection was refused when attempting to contact 127.0.0.1:6018

Vicaya 4729 (2004.11.04)

Test date: 2004.11.04
Machine: Macintosh 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
OS: Mac OS X (10.3.5)
Summary: Of the browsers I tried, only Safari seems to work.
Comments: Each HMTL non-breaking space (&nbsp) in the original text shows up in the search results as a capital E with a circumflex accent (Ê). Perhaps these should be mapped to white space. Are all special HTML entities mapped to something useful?
Browser Results
Safari 1.2.3 (v125.9) Security dialog: 'Do you want to trust the signed applet distributed by "Alexander E Genaud"? Publisher authenticity verified by: "Access to Insight"'. I click "Yes".
search: search results page opens in the current browser window
new window: search results opens in a new browser window
Ugly (no temp file): nothing happens
IE 5.2.3 (5815.1) "Java Plug-in Security Warning" dialog pops up, asking me 'Do you want to install and run signed applet distributed by "Alexander E Genaud"? Publisher authenticity verified by: "Access to Insight".' I click "Grant this session".
search: nothing happens when I click the "search" button
new window: [ditto]
Ugly (no temp file): [ditto]
Camino 2004051715 (v0.8b) (Same security dialog as for IE. I click "Grant this session".)

No buttons or text fields appear. Instead, I get an error message:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.accesstoinsight.vicaya.Search.class

script2java (2004.11.04)

Test date: 2004.11.04
Machine: Macintosh 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4
OS: Mac OS X (10.3.5)
Summary: This didn't seem to work at all. Am I missing something?
