I Am What (2025)

To prepare for this installation, the artist recorded himself speaking aloud a small vocabulary of simple words. During performance, a computer assembles these words in real-time into meaningful sentences that mimic the complexity of the internal experience of our human relationships. The generated sentences are inspired by the writings of psychiatrist R.D. Laing, and might range from the simple, "I am who I am," to "I am not what she thinks I am," to the baffling "He is who they think we are, not what you think I am." The program is non-repeating, with the spoken sentences appearing in random configurations while retaining an internal logic. The six loudspeakers stand at eye-level, suggestive of a group of people in conversation as they navigate their often neurotic interactions.

Say it Forward (2024)

This five-channel audio installation invites participants to speak into a microphone and listen to themselves — and to those who have come before — after multiple delays that range from a few seconds to several minutes. As visitors come and go, each leaves their own audible mark that is then passed along to subsequent visitors. The result is an ever-evolving trail of words, poetry, song, and background ambience that reflects the history of what has come before.

Sound Field (2023)

Sound Field is an immersive soundscape installation that celebrates the range and variety of sound while inviting the listener to experience the act of pure listening.

I assembled the sounds from my collection of field recordings and other sonic ephemera. Some sounds will be familiar — birdsong, crickets, water, wind — while others defy immediate recognition. The interplay between the familiar and the novel aims to suspend the listener in a state of unknowing, witness to a heightened awareness of the natural urge to identify, categorize, and construct meaning from sensory experience. Listening thus becomes a mirror to the movement of the mind itself.

The arrangement of eight loudspeakers allows you to move about and explore the listening space from different angles and discover the shifting relationships between the sounds. The program is continuous and non-repeating: if you return in a few minutes you will encounter an entirely new chorus of sounds, providing a fresh opportunity to explore the nature of listening.

Earth, Invisible (2022)

EarthInvisible

Earth, Invisible (installation view)

This eight-channel sound installation features the seismic sounds of the earth recorded from around the world in near-real-time. The Planetary Sound Machine collects live data from eight seismic sensors, which have been deployed worldwide by international research institutions, and converts the data into audible sound. As listeners walk about the installation, they experience the shifting sounds generated by earthquakes, ocean storms, and the background vibrations of the entire planet.
